Invited Session
This panel presents the first results of a brand new research resource, the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), designed to overcome past measurement problems and to better understand the determinants and consequences of functional impairment for the elderly. New substantive findings will be presented on disability rates, both late and earlier life onset, and on how informal helpers mediate elders' interactions with physicians and the health care system.
